North Port has the distinction of being the smallest big city in
the state of Florida. It is the fifth largest city in the state
in land area but it is only 10 percent populated. North Port is
one of Sarasota County's smaller municipalities with a
population of a little more than 25,000. Growth has been
phenomenal since its birth as a community and "the best is
yet to come!"
The city was incorporated in 1959. In 1991, voters chose to
eliminate the mayor's position and instead go to a five city
commissioners/city manager form of government.
A popular place to build because of lower property taxes and the
lowest impact fees in Sarasota County, the average resale home
in the North Port Real Estate area is $75,000; the average new home $82,000. More expensive homes
can be found in Sabal Trace, a gated community (bordering the
Sabal Trace Golf & Country Club), in the island community of
Duck Key, along the canals, or in the North Port Estates area.
Currently, approximately two dozen churches meet the spiritual
and social needs of residents. Community organizations began to
form as the population blossomed and people began to experience
a feeling of closeness and involvement with their community. A
beautiful new library opened in 1992.
One of the world's best-known health spas, Warm Mineral Springs,
is located just north of the city limits. Thousand of guests who
are seeking relief from arthritis, rheumatism and muscular
problems visit annually. Bathers relate that they experience a
healing effect from the 87 degree Fahrenheit water temperature
and the heavily mineralized, warm spring waters.
Newlyweds and young families have made North Port their home as
they are becoming aware of the North Port Real Estate area's lower housing
costs, tax benefits and generally reduced living expenses. Since
1980, North Port has built two elementary schools and will see a
Middle/High School within the next few years.
Because North Port has plenty of land left for commerce, housing
and recreation, it is not surprising that North Port real estate
has
continued its healthy growth. It is close to the beaches, the
"big city life" and cultural aspects that accompany
it, but pastoral, serene rural areas and beautiful blue skies
are here too. North Port can justifiably be proud of its
progressive 37-year history.
